The One String Project

By Dariya Dobreva

Americans honor Martin Luther King Jr. today in a day set aside to honor the late civil rights leader.

Martin Luther King Jr. was born Jan. 15, 1929 and went on to become the most visible spokesperson of the civil rights movement. His message of non-violent resistance led to massive changes in American culture and paved the way for the end of segregation and the expansion of human rights. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968, at the age of 39. His legacy is celebrated each year with the holiday named in his honor. Here is one of the best quotes from and about Martin Luther King for MLK Day 2018:

“If Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was preaching today, he would be speaking the idea that we are one people, one family, one house—the American house and the world house—that we must learn to live together as brothers and sisters, if not we will perish as fools,” says Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga.

The project we had for Martin Luther King Jr. was inspired from his life’s work. In today’s society we see too much anger, too much hate between humans. This project represents what we can accomplish together. Everyone has their own life and their own string. They can put anything on their string. Every day is full of up and downs. Every color in the sting represents what we feel, how we express what’s bothering us and as individuals we think that only we can do this or that. The string connected together for new perspective gives us new light on how we can accomplish more by working together. When we put the string tougher show us how strong we are; connecting it one end to another can show us where we can go together.

Hate and anger can be resolved if we work together and we collect everybody’s thoughts. No matter how hard times can be, as humans and as a society we can and we will create greatness.

“Let no man pull you low enough to hate him.” — Martin Luther King Jr.

When I look back in the past year with everything that we have been trough I can only say that my “string” was affected in a very positive way. We faced very hard times with natural disasters and only working together helped me and everybody around me to overcome the hard times. In the wake of the big hurricane I witnessed that there were people coming out in the dark rainy night to help their fellow neighbor without fear.

“That is what all is about” I thought in that moments.

We are first of all humans. And as such we are equal in good and bad. We have to stay together, to stay strong and help each other.

That’s why my string is full of colors, full of hope and connecting it with all other’s strings it can only get better!
